Neglected Tropical Diseases
Neglected Tropical Diseases or NTD- sound pretty unfamiliar. One of seven are infected by the diseases in Europe. These are some diseases caused by various parasites which have a huge impact on a whole nation. For an example a Byzantine Emperor once defeated the Bulgarian army and captured 15000 soldiers. He ordered to make 99 out of hundreds fully blind and 1 partially to lead the 99 back home. He did this to weaken them so that it takes years for Bulgaria to take care of the soldiers rather than attacking again. The NTD work like that.
Some diseases cause life long organ damage, impare intelligence in newborns, weak vision and even disfigurement of the body creating social stigma, blindness and so on. One of them called Dracunculiasis is a disease caused by Guinea worm. If the eggs somehow enters someone’s body it will stay dormant for a year without any symptom. Then the larvae will start coming out of the person’s leg. It grows about a meter long and takes long time to get it out. Although the parasite was eradicated almost fully by 2015.
NTDs mostly occur in populations that are isolated, have low access to health support or medical assistance and poor. These diseases are preventable if given proper treatment and medicines. But not everybody gets it. So it is crucial to ensure that no one misses the opportunity to learn about NTDs and have full access to medication.
